Chris Brown hails from Australia where he was professional trained in ranch management. He came to the United States in 1972 to enhance his knowledge of the training and breeding of the newly introduced American Quarter Horse to Australia. During his investigations of breeding farms in the U.S., he was bitten by the "cutting bug" and was fortunate to become employed by, and learn the cutting trade from, one of cutting industry's greats: Leon Harrel. In 1983, Chris opened his own cutting horse training facility on his 16 acre ranch in Santa Rosa where he specialized in teaching Non-Pros to cut. Over the next few years, his Non-Pros won many honors culminating in 1988 when 8 of his students qualified for the Pacific Coast Shoot Out.
During Chris's early years his wins included:
- Trainer Non-Pro Challenge Champion 1988
- Rider/Trainer Champion Pacific Coast Challenge 1987
- Rider/Trainer Top 10 Gelding Pacific Coast 1987
- Rider/Trainer NCHA Top 10 Novice Horse 1986
- Trainer NCHA Top 10 Novice Non-Pro 1986
Chris's success as a cutting trainer led to an offer to be the exclusive cutting horse trainer and showman for Glenn and Lou Penisten's Lazy P Ranch in Windsor, California. After eight years at the Lazy P, Chris decided to return to his own ranch and resume cutting training and showing for the public.
